Julie Carey, Founder
With a BA in Anthropology and an MA in Bilingual/Multicultural Education, Julie’s career as an educator has spanned a variety of leadership and instructional roles in outdoor education, classroom teaching, teacher preparation and international travel. Her expertise in the field of language acquisition has developed through years of teaching ESL both domestically and abroad, and preparing public school teachers to work with multilingual learners. Julie is an avid traveler and committed to working to connect and empower children around the world.
Michele Thompson, Board Member
Michele has been serving children and families as a social worker for almost 20 years. She currently works to support the social/emotional and behavioral functioning of children so that they can access their full potential as learners in public schools. She brings to Write Our World a wealth of creative energy and knowledge in serving the diverse needs of children in education.
John Crawford, Board Member
John is a private equity investment professional based in Toronto, focusing on infrastructure investments. Previously, John was an investment banker focused on M&A and Restructuring. John holds a BA in Arabic Literature and a BS in Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley. He is passionate about building connections among children internationally.
Kate Mahoney, Board Member
For over 18 years, Kate has worked internationally on humanitarian policy, child protection, refugee protection and post-conflict development. Among others, she has worked for UNHCR, UNICEF and Save the Children and is currently Principal at KAM Consulting.
Dr. Leigh Zeitz, Board Member
Leigh Zeitz, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the instructional technology program at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI). He engages practicing and future teachers in the many learning opportunities available through technology. Zeitz is the coordinator of the Instructional Technology division in the UNI department of Curriculum and Instruction. Beyond higher education, Zeitz has practical experience in schools, having taught first through twelfth grades in public, private, and prison schools. He was the instructional technology coordinator for Price Laboratory School for six years. Zeitz has authored seven books and more than 75 articles on using education technology and has given more than 150 presentations on three continents. Dr. Z has great interest in expanding students’ worldwide experience through Global Collaboration projects. He is the Past President of the ISTE Global Collaboration Network.
Dr. Nancy L. Commins, Advisory Board Member
Dr. Nancy L. Commins has worked with students and educators from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds in a variety of capacities for more than three decades. Her roles have included bilingual classroom teacher, university professor, program director, school district administrator and independent consultant assisting schools, districts and CDE to improve instruction for bilingual learners. She is co-author of two books Linguistic Diversity and Teaching and Restructuring Schools for Linguistic Diversity: Linking Decision Making to Effective Programs.
